Westeinde was one of The Hagues main entrances. Yet, past infrastructural projects rendered it less visible and accessible. The city aims to densify and reconnect Westeinde to recover its important central position.
Through design research – based on local future scenarios – opportunities and problems were discovered; which interventions can strengthen the district, where can intensification take place, what are the needs of stakeholders. Potential was found in the strengthening of two environments: a central urban area behind the Prinsengracht that gets renewed relationship with the city, and quiet and green living around the Kortenbos Park. By smartly combining local densification and small changes in public space, the quality of life can greatly improve. Three key projects show that interventions can work as a catalyst for development.
