The Markermeer-IJmeer has experienced a rapid decline of the amount and diversity of water plants and fauna. Moreover, it lake has mainly hard shores and little gradual water-to-land transitions. Especially these type of transitional habitats are important for the life of many plant and animal species. Together with the specialists of Tauw, LAgroup, Tebezo en Robusta, we developed small floating islands that re-create foreshores and shallows along the dike. By installing artificial aquatic plants, silt is retained and the water velocity is reduced. This leads to clearer water that allows natural plants to grow. These ‘stepping stones’ enhance ecological connections between the Marker-IJ Lake and the polder and also contribute experiential value of nature.
